EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Frederick Armand de Schomberg, a remarkable figure from the 17th century. The image, taken in 1830 by an unknown creator, is part of "Biographical Illustrations" by Alfred Howard. Schomberg's life story is one of resilience and military prowess. Born in Heidelberg in 1615, Schomberg faced tragedy early on as he was orphaned shortly after birth. However, he found solace and guidance through family friends such as Frederick V, the Elector Palatine of Bohemia. These connections led him to enter the military service of Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange. Schomberg's talents did not go unnoticed as he rose through the ranks to become Marshal of France and a General in both the English and Portuguese Armies. His direct gaze captured in this engraving reflects his unwavering determination on the battlefield. Tragically, Schomberg met his demise at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. This historic battle marked a significant moment for Britain and Ireland. Despite his untimely death, Schomberg left behind an enduring legacy as a skilled military strategist. The detailed armor worn by Schomberg further emphasizes his stature as a formidable leader during turbulent times. This print serves as a poignant reminder of his contributions to British history and honors his memory alongside other notable figures depicted within "Biographical Illustrations. "
