Saint Sebastian, about 1776. Creator: James Barry (Irish, 1741-1806)

Saint Sebastian, about 1776. This etching by Irish artist James Barry portrays Sebastian, the Roman solider who was shot with arrows for refusing to renounce his Christian faith. Following tradition, Barry depicted the martyr nude except for a loincloth and bound to a tree. Unconventionally, Barry did not depict the saint gazing heavenward as a sign of dedication to his faith, but instead masked Sebastians eyes in shadow, heightening the sense of physical suffering. Saint Sebastians idealized body, with a curved form that echoes the tree, reflects the influence of Michelangelo, whose works Barry admired during a sojourn in Rome from 1765 to 1771. This is the only known impression of this print

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases James Barry's "Saint Sebastian" a remarkable etching that delves into the story of this iconic Roman soldier. Created in 1776, Barry's interpretation stays true to tradition by depicting Saint Sebastian as a martyr bound to a tree, wearing only a loincloth. However, what sets this artwork apart is Barry's unconventional approach. Rather than portraying the saint with his eyes turned towards heaven in unwavering devotion, Barry shrouds Sebastian's eyes in shadow. This artistic choice intensifies the physical suffering endured by the saint and adds an element of mystery to the composition. The idealized body of Saint Sebastian mirrors the curvature of the tree behind him, revealing Barry's admiration for Michelangelo and his works. This particular print is unique; it represents the sole known impression of this masterpiece. It serves as a testament to James Barry's talent and creativity as an Irish artist during his time from 1741 to 1806. Preserved within The Cleveland Museum of Art, this soft ground etching captures both historical significance and aesthetic brilliance. Heritage Art/Heritage Images proudly presents this exquisite print for art enthusiasts who appreciate profound storytelling through visual mediums.
