Russian Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin at a radio recording in the Kremlin, Moscow, Russia, 1919

Russian Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin at a radio recording in the Kremlin, Moscow, Russia, 1919. Lenin (1870-1924) became leader of the Bolshevik faction of the Russian Social Democratic and Labour Party in 1903. He became involved in revolutionary politics when studying law at University in the late 1880s. In 1895 he was arrested by the authorities, serving a years imprisonment followed by four years exile to Siberia. In 1906 he left Russia for security reasons, becoming the focus of the revolutionary opposition abroad. Lenin returned to Russia in 1917 after the February Revolution, but had to flee to Finland after a failed workers uprising in July. In October the Bolsheviks overthrew Alexander Kerenskys Provisional Government in a further revolution, and Lenin was elected Premier of the Soviet Union. He was wounded in an assassination attempt in 1918 and this, together with the strains of revolution and the ensuing Civil War, led to a deterioration in his health. After a stroke left him partially paralysed in 1922, Lenins active role in government declined. Found in the collection of the State Museum of History, Moscow

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Russian Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin during a radio recording session at the Kremlin in Moscow, Russia, in 1919. Lenin, born in 1870 and passing away in 1924, emerged as the prominent figure of the Bolshevik faction within the Russian Social Democratic and Labour Party. His revolutionary spirit was ignited while studying law at university during the late 1880s. Lenin's unwavering dedication to his cause led to his arrest by authorities in 1895, resulting in a year-long imprisonment followed by four years of exile to Siberia. In search of security, he left Russia for abroad in 1906 and became an influential figure among revolutionary opposition groups. Returning to Russia after the February Revolution of 1917, Lenin faced further challenges when a workers' uprising failed that July, forcing him to seek refuge in Finland. However, October brought about another revolution as the Bolsheviks successfully overthrew Alexander Kerensky's Provisional Government. Subsequently elected Premier of the Soviet Union, Lenin's leadership was marked by an assassination attempt that wounded him gravely in 1918. The strains imposed by revolution and subsequent Civil War took their toll on Lenin's health. A stroke partially paralyzed him in 1922 and gradually diminished his active role within government affairs. Preserved within the State Museum of History located in Moscow today is this remarkable image capturing one moment from Lenins' eventful life—a testament to his enduring legacy as a key player shaping Russian history amidst turbulent times.
