The Rival Con jurors, 1869. Artist: John Tenniel
The Rival Con jurors, 1869. The new Liberal Chancellor for the Exchequer introduced his first Budget. Income tax was reduced by 1penny in the pound and the duty on foreign corn was abolished, and the duty on fire assurance was planned to be abolished. This cartoon shows Robert Lowe dressed in contemporary circus costume performing a sleight of hand with the surplus egg in front of an admiring audience. To the right is Disraeli, for many years the Conservative Chancellor, but now the Party Leader in opposition, wishing he had performed the same trick. From Punch, or the London Charivari, April 24, 1869

The Rival Con jurors, 1869
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that captures a significant moment in British political history. Created by the talented artist John Tenniel, this cartoon depicts the new Liberal Chancellor for the Exchequer introducing his first Budget in 1869. The budget brought about several noteworthy changes, including a reduction of income tax by one penny in the pound and the abolition of duty on foreign corn. In this amusing caricature, we see Robert Lowe dressed in an extravagant circus costume, performing a sleight of hand trick with a surplus egg. He stands before an admiring audience while Disraeli, who had been the Conservative Chancellor for many years but was now leading the opposition party, looks on with envy. It seems that Disraeli wishes he had performed such an impressive feat himself. The cartoon symbolizes both political satire and entertainment as it humorously portrays these prominent figures from British politics during the 19th century. The attention to detail is evident in every element captured within this engraving - from banners and flags to musical instruments and furniture. This historic artwork sheds light on important events surrounding taxation policies and political rivalries during that time period. It serves as a reminder of how art can be used to convey complex ideas through humor and visual storytelling.
