EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures the distinguished figure of Sir Austen Henry Layard, a prominent British diplomat and archaeologist. In 1877, Layard served as the British Ambassador to Constantinople, representing his country during a crucial period in history. However, it was his groundbreaking archaeological work between 1845 and 1851 that truly cemented his legacy. During those years, Layard excavated the ancient Assyrian capitals of Nimrud and Nineveh in Mesopotamia. His discoveries astonished Europe when he revealed the beautifully decorated royal palaces adorned with reliefs from antiquity. Layard's account of these findings became immensely popular and widely read. After retiring from excavation in 1851, Layard ventured into politics while still maintaining an influential presence within academic circles. A member of the Liberal Party, he held various political positions including Member of Parliament (MP). This portrait showcases him as a statesman with a commanding presence - his body language exudes confidence and authority. Lock & Whitfield skillfully captured this momentous figure through their lens for their series "Men of Mark" which aimed to portray contemporary individuals who had made significant contributions across different fields such as science, literature, art, law, medicine, and politics. This black-and-white photograph serves as a testament to Sir Austen Henry Layard's multifaceted career - one that encompassed both diplomatic achievements on behalf of Britain and groundbreaking archaeological discoveries that reshaped our understanding of ancient civilizations.
