EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic figure of Richard I, King of England, as depicted by the talented artist Edward Lutterell. Richard I, also known as Richard Coueur de Lion or the Lionheart, was a formidable ruler who reigned from 1189 to 1199 during the 12th century. As the second Angevin king of England and son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, he left an indelible mark on history. The image portrays Richard in his regal splendor, wearing a crown that symbolizes his authority and power. Clad in armor befitting a warrior king, he exudes strength and determination. This portrayal reflects his reputation as both a skilled military leader and a devout Christian crusader. Richard's reign was marked by significant events such as his participation in the Third Crusade to reclaim Jerusalem from Muslim control. However, it was during this campaign that he faced capture by Leopold V of Austria before being held captive in Germany for several years. Tragically, Richard met his untimely demise while at war with France when an infected arrow wound claimed his life. Despite spending much of his reign abroad or engaged in conflict, Richard remains one of England's most revered monarchs. Edward Lutterell's masterful engraving immortalizes King Richard I's legacy through intricate details that bring this historical figure to life once more. The print serves as a reminder of the bravery and resilience exhibited by this remarkable ruler throughout medieval times.
