EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century print captures the esteemed figure of Richard Deane, an English general at sea during the mid-17th century. Known for his pivotal role in the English Civil War, Deane commanded the Parliamentary artillery at the Battle of Naseby in 1642 and later became General-at-Sea in 1650. His commitment to the Parliamentarian cause was exemplified by his participation in signing Charles I's death warrant as one of the regicides. In this portrait, Deane stands proudly donning a suit of armor, symbolizing his military prowess and dedication to protecting England's interests. The roundhead hairstyle further identifies him as a staunch supporter of Parliament against King Charles I and his royalist forces. Tragically, Deane met his untimely demise while leading joint command of the fleet during two significant naval battles: Portland and Gabbard. Despite being killed in action aboard Resolution at Gabbard, Deane's legacy lives on as a courageous soldier who fought for political reform and republican ideals. This image not only offers us a glimpse into one man's influential role within history but also serves as a reminder of England's turbulent past during this transformative period. Through this photo print, we are transported back to an era defined by conflict, politics, and unwavering determination - all embodied by Richard Deane himself.
