Queen Henrietta Marias Entry into London, 1625 (1903)

Queen Henrietta Marias Entry into London, 1625 (1903). Henrietta Maria of France (1609-1669) was Queen Consort of England, Scotland, and Ireland as the wife of King Charles I (1600-1649). She married Charles by proxy on 11 May 1625. They were then married in person at St Augustines Church, Canterbury, Kent, on 13 June 1625, but Henrietta Marias Catholic religion made it impossible for her to be crowned with her husband in an Anglican service. In the end, her failure to be crowned went down badly with the London crowds. From London in the Time of the Stuarts, by Sir Walter Besant. [Adam & Charles Black, London, 1903]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic moment of Queen Henrietta Maria's Entry into London in 1625. As the Queen Consort of England, Scotland, and Ireland, she was married to King Charles I during a time of religious tension. The photograph showcases the grandeur and significance of this event. Queen Henrietta Maria's marriage to King Charles I took place at St Augustine's Church in Canterbury, Kent. However, due to her Catholic faith, she was unable to be crowned alongside her husband in an Anglican service. This decision did not sit well with the London crowds who were expecting a joint coronation. The image depicts a bustling street filled with people eagerly awaiting the arrival of their new queen. The architecture surrounding them reflects the era's distinctive style and adds depth to the scene. The atmosphere is charged with anticipation as Queen Henrietta Maria makes her way through Cheapside towards her destination. This photograph serves as a reminder of both political and religious controversies that shaped British history during the Stuart period. It highlights Queen Henrietta Maria's role as a symbol of Catholicism within Protestant England. Preserved by Sir Walter Besant in his book "London in the Time of Stuarts" this print allows us to witness an important moment from centuries ago. It invites us to reflect on how religion influenced politics and society during this tumultuous time in Britain's past.
