Madame Tallien, late 18th century (1882-1884). Artist: Charaire et fils

Madame Tallien, late 18th century (1882-1884). Theresa Cabarrus (1773-1835) became the mistress of, and later married, Jean Lambert Tallien a deputy of the National Convention and later a member of the Committee for Public Safety, who saved her from the guillotine. The couple separated however, and were divorced in 1802. Theresa went on to become one of the most prominent social figures in France and was one of the originators of the Neo-Grec fashion of the Directory period. She had a brief relationship with Napoleon before becoming the mistress of fist Paul Barras, then the millionaire speculator Gabriel-Julien Ouvrard. In 1805 she married the Prince of Chimay. A print from La France et les Francais a Travers les Siecles, Volume IV, F Roy editor, A Challamel, Saint-Antoine, 1882-1884

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Madame Tallien, a prominent figure of the late 18th century. Theresa Cabarrus, as she was originally known, led an extraordinary life filled with love affairs, political connections, and social prominence. Born in 1773, Theresa became the mistress and later wife of Jean Lambert Tallien, a significant figure during the French Revolution. He saved her from facing the guillotine during those tumultuous times. However, their relationship eventually crumbled leading to divorce in 1802. Undeterred by personal setbacks, Theresa emerged as one of France's most influential socialites. She played a pivotal role in popularizing the Neo-Grec fashion trend that defined the Directory period. Her impeccable taste in dress and costume became widely admired throughout the country. Theresa's romantic escapades continued even after her marriage ended. She had a brief affair with Napoleon Bonaparte before becoming involved with Paul Barras and Gabriel-Julien Ouvrard - both wealthy men who held considerable power at that time. In 1805, Theresa married Prince Chimay cementing her place among European nobility. This engraving captures her elegance and poise as she gazes confidently into the distance. Preserved within this print is not only Madame Tallien's beauty but also her indomitable spirit amidst turbulent times. It serves as a testament to an era marked by rebellion and revolution while highlighting one woman's journey from tragedy to triumph on society's grand stage.
