The Macaronies, 1772, (1910)
The Macaronies, 1772, (1910). The Macaroni Club in London was founded in 1772 by young men of the fashionable world who had been on the Grand Tour in Italy, in opposition to the Beef-Steak Club. The hair is drawn upwards in a large toupee with rolled curls at the sides - behind, it was made into an enormous knob which rested on the back of the neck, with an extremely small hat on top and a large scarf tied in a bow round the neck. The coat is edged with lace or braid and decorated with frog buttons, tassels, and embroidery. The breeches are of striped silk with strings at the knee, and silk stockings. Illustration from British Costume during 19 Centuries by Mrs Charles H Ashdown, (London, 1910)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a fascinating glimpse into the fashion of the 18th century. Titled "The Macaronies, 1772" this image showcases members of The Macaroni Club in London, founded in opposition to the Beef-Steak Club. These young men were part of the fashionable world and had recently returned from their Grand Tour in Italy. The elaborate hairstyles are particularly eye-catching, with large toupees styled upwards and rolled curls at the sides. The hair is then fashioned into an enormous knob resting on the back of their necks, topped with an incredibly small hat. A large scarf tied in a bow completes their unique look. Their attire is equally ornate, featuring coats edged with lace or braid adorned with frog buttons, tassels, and embroidery. Striped silk breeches with strings at the knee are paired with silk stockings for a truly extravagant ensemble. In this monochrome photograph by Emily Jessie Ashdown from her book "British Costume during 19 Centuries" we get a glimpse into the opulent style that defined this era. It serves as a reminder of how fashion has evolved over time while also showcasing historical British culture.
