Leaf Excised from a Book of Hours: The Nativity, c
Leaf Excised from a Book of Hours: The Nativity, c. 1480. The Ghent-Bruges school of illumination represents the culmination of Flemish book painting. Its main features were the use of rich colours, decorative and illusionistic effects, a love of landscape, and a strong sense of visual narrative. Its most distinctive innovation was the development of a new style of border decoration featuring realistic motifs which cast shadows onto coloured grounds to create a trompe l oeil effect. These motifs included a rich assortment of flowers, butterflies, insects, birds, and sprays of acanthus foliage. Foremost among the exponents of this style was the illuminator Alexander Bening. He is known to have entered the painters guild in Ghent in 1469. Little else is known about Alexanders career. It must be assumed, however, that he worked in close association with other miniaturists and panel painters such as Roger van der Weyden, Hugo van der Goes, and Gerard David, whose compositions are often adapted or replicated in Alexanders miniatures

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a leaf excised from a Book of Hours, specifically depicting "The Nativity". Created around 1480 by the renowned Ghent-Bruges school of illumination, this piece represents the pinnacle of Flemish book painting. The distinctive characteristics of this school include vibrant colors, decorative and illusionistic effects, an appreciation for landscapes, and a strong emphasis on visual storytelling. One remarkable innovation introduced by the Ghent-Bruges illuminators was their border decoration style. This technique featured realistic motifs that cast shadows onto colored backgrounds to create a trompe l'oeil effect. These motifs consisted of an array of exquisite flowers, delicate butterflies, intricate insects, graceful birds, and elegant sprays of acanthus foliage. Among the luminaries who mastered this style was Alexander Bening, an accomplished illuminator who joined the painters guild in Ghent in 1469. Unfortunately, little is known about his career beyond that point. However, it can be assumed that he collaborated closely with other miniaturists and panel painters such as Roger van der Weyden, Hugo van der Goes, and Gerard David. In fact, many compositions created by these esteemed artists were adapted or replicated in Alexander's miniature masterpieces. This stunning print captures not only the beauty and intricacy of Alexanders work but also serves as a testament to the rich artistic heritage preserved by Heritage Art/Heritage Images (not affiliated with any company). It offers viewers a glimpse into the world of medieval book illumination while showcasing the skillful craftsmanship and attention to detail characteristic of this extraordinary period in art history.
