Knitting in the Library (recto), c. 1881. Creator: Mary Cassatt (American, 1844-1926)

Knitting in the Library (recto), c. 1881. In this working drawing for the softground etching and aquatint of the same title, Cassatt portrays her mother in a quiet moment of concentration with her handwork. Freely drawn, the study was used to block out main areas of light and dark with strong diagonal shading in graphite. Cassatts skillful arrangement of forms may be found in the contrast between the curving lines of the figure and the armchair with the verticals and horizontals of the flanking bookcase. Cassatts mother, Katherine Kelso Cassatt, had received a Continental education, spoke fluent French, and was extremely well read. She oversaw the rigorous education of her children and supported Cassatts artistic career, living abroad with her daughter and often serving as a model

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Knitting in the Library" showcases the artistic brilliance of Mary Cassatt, an esteemed American artist from the late 19th century. Created around 1881, this working drawing was a precursor to Cassatt's softground etching and aquatint of the same name. In this particular piece, Cassatt beautifully captures a serene moment as she portrays her mother engrossed in knitting with utmost concentration. The study itself is freely drawn, using graphite to block out areas of light and dark with skillful diagonal shading. The contrast between the curving lines of her mother's figure and the armchair against the verticals and horizontals of the flanking bookcase demonstrates Cassatt's mastery in arranging forms. Katherine Kelso Cassatt, Mary's mother, played a significant role not only in supporting her daughter's artistic career but also overseeing their rigorous education while living abroad together. With a Continental education background, fluent French-speaking skills, and extensive knowledge through reading, Katherine served as both muse and mentor for Mary. This remarkable print by Heritage Art/Heritage Images provides viewers with an intimate glimpse into a quiet moment shared between mother and daughter. It serves as a testament to Mary Cassatt's exceptional talent for capturing human emotions through artistry while honoring her beloved mother who played such an influential role in her life.
