EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enigmatic figure of Juan Clemente Zenea, a renowned poet born in Bayamo in 1838. In the 1920s, this image became part of a cigar card series titled "History of Cuba" by Susini and La Corona, produced by Tabacalera Cubana. Zenea's life was marked by his passionate pursuit of artistic expression and his unwavering commitment to Cuban independence. Known for publishing songs that celebrated the beauty of afternoons, he also held separatist ideas that challenged Spanish colonial rule. The photograph portrays Zenea with an air of intellectuality, wearing spectacles that accentuate his thoughtful gaze. His attire reflects the fashion trends of the era - a stylish jacket adding to his distinguished appearance. However, behind this seemingly romantic facade lies a tragic tale. In November 1870, Zenea returned to Cuba on behalf of the Spanish Government but was branded a traitor due to his separatist beliefs. He endured eight months in confinement before facing execution on August 25th, 1871. This poignant image serves as both a tribute to Zenea's literary contributions during the Romantic era and as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought for Cuban independence in the tumultuous nineteenth century. It stands as testament to one man's unwavering dedication to his country and ideals amidst political turmoil and personal tragedy.
