Jacques Turgot, (1933). Creator: Unknown
Jacques Turgot, (1933). Portrait of French statesman and economist Anne-Robert-Jacques Turgot, baron de l Aulne (1727-1781). Turgot was an advocate of free trade and laissez-faire principles in economics. As comptroller-general of finances (1774-1776), he advocated radical reforms to the French economy and taxation system. His policies, particularly edicts abolishing guilds and levying taxation on all, including the nobility, made Turgot many enemies, and Louis XVI was persuaded to demand his resignation. Turgots edicts were repealed, but his conviction that the only alternative to radical reform was revolution proved to be correct in 1789. From " Gestalten Der Weltgeschichte", a book of cigarette-card portrait miniatures of figures in world history from the last four hundred years. [Germany, 1933]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Jacques Turgot, a prominent French statesman and economist from the 18th century. The portrait, taken in 1933 by an unknown creator, showcases Turgot's dignified presence and intellectual prowess. Turgot was a staunch advocate of free trade and laissez-faire principles in economics. As comptroller-general of finances from 1774 to 1776, he pushed for radical reforms to revolutionize the French economy and taxation system. His audacious policies included abolishing guilds and imposing taxes on all citizens, including the nobility. These bold moves made him many enemies among the elite classes, ultimately leading to his resignation when King Louis XVI succumbed to pressure. Although Turgot's edicts were repealed after his departure, history proved him right. He firmly believed that without significant reform, revolution would be inevitable – a prediction that came true during the French Revolution in 1789. This image is part of "Gestalten Der Weltgeschichte" a collection featuring cigarette-card portrait miniatures of influential figures throughout history. It offers us a glimpse into Turgot's character as well as his lasting impact on France's economic landscape. As we admire this striking photograph print today, let us remember Jacques Turgot as an exceptional politician who fearlessly challenged traditional norms in pursuit of progress and equality for all citizens.
