Ice Cave, c1911, (1913). Artist: G Murray Levick
Ice Cave, c1911, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Ice Cave, c1911" captures a hauntingly beautiful scene from the final expedition of Captain Robert Falcon Scott. In 1910, Scott led the Terra Nova Expedition to the South Pole, aiming to continue his scientific research and become the first person to reach this remote location. The diverse team included experts in various fields such as geology, zoology, meteorology, and photography. This particular image showcases an ice cave discovered during their arduous journey through Antarctica's icy landscapes. G Murray Levick, one of the expedition members and a skilled photographer, expertly captured the ethereal blue hues emanating from within the frozen cavern. The delicate icicles hanging from above create a mesmerizing spectacle that draws viewers into this otherworldly environment. However, despite their valiant efforts and determination, Scott and his companions were met with disappointment upon reaching their destination on January 17th, 1912. They found that Roald Amundsen's Norwegian expedition had beaten them to it by a month. Tragically delayed by blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey, Scott and his remaining team perished at the end of March. This poignant photograph serves as a reminder of both humanity's indomitable spirit in pursuit of knowledge and exploration but also its vulnerability against nature's unforgiving forces. It stands as a testament to Captain Scott's enduring legacy as an explorer who pushed boundaries in search of discovery while paying homage to those brave souls who sacrificed everything for science and adventure in Earth's most extreme environments.
