Great Skiff Race, at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 1844. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the thrilling Great Skiff Race that took place in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1844. The rowing race on the River Tyne was a grand spectacle, attracting renowned watermen from both London and Newcastle. The competitors were Coombes, the celebrated Thames waterman, and Henry Clasper of Derwent Haugh, who enjoyed equal fame among the watermen of the Tyne. Both boats were specially constructed for this momentous occasion. The London skiff, built by Messrs. Cowndes and Wintzell of Lambeth, weighed an impressive 43lbs. On the other hand, Clasper himself crafted the mahogany skiff from Newcastle which weighed slightly heavier at 6lb. The race was not without controversy as a protest arose against Coombes receiving the stakes due to an alleged violation during his rowing. Witnesses were examined thoroughly before a referee made his decision: "that Coombes was entitled to the stakes". In this engraving from Illustrated London News in 1844, we see spectators lining up along bridges and riverbanks to witness this exhilarating competition unfold. The suspension bridge stands tall in its Victorian glory as a backdrop to this intense sporting event. This historic photograph is a testament to both the passion for rowing races during that era and also showcases how sport brought people together across different regions of Britain. It serves as a reminder of our rich heritage and love for competitive sports that have endured throughout time.
