Georges Boulanger, French general and politician, 1891

Georges Boulanger, French general and politician, 1891. A reactionary politician, Boulanger (1837-1891) gained great popularity in the second half of the 1880s, particularly with the monarchists. By 1889 a coup d etat to install Boulanger as military dictator seemed a real possibility, but after the government charged him with conspiracy and involvement in treasonable activity, he fled into exile. Support for the Boulangist movement dwindled without its leader and in 1891 he committed suicide, shooting himself in the head in Ixelles Cemetery in Brussels. A photograph from Album de Photographies, Dans L Intimite de Personnages Illustres, 1845-1890, Editions MD, 22 Rue de L Arcade, Paris 8, 1845-1890

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Georges Boulanger, a prominent French general and politician in 1891. Known for his reactionary views, Boulanger gained immense popularity during the latter half of the 1880s, particularly among monarchists. The image showcases him seated in an elegant armchair, exuding an air of relaxation and confidence. With his legs crossed and dressed in a military uniform, Boulanger embodies both power and poise. His presence commands attention as he gazes directly at the camera with a hint of determination in his eyes. This portrait offers a glimpse into the life of this influential figure during a tumultuous period in French history. The photograph also serves as a reminder of the political turmoil that surrounded Boulanger's career. By 1889, there was genuine concern that he could seize power through a coup d'état to become France's military dictator. However, when charged with conspiracy and treasonable activities by the government, he was forced into exile. Tragically, without their leader at its helm, support for the Boulangist movement dwindled rapidly. In 1891, overwhelmed by despair and facing mounting personal challenges, Boulanger took his own life by shooting himself in Ixelles Cemetery in Brussels. This rare photographic gem from Album de Photographies provides us with an intimate look into one of France's most controversial figures from the late 19th century - Georges Boulanger - forever frozen in time within this monochrome masterpiece.
