Frieze with Apsaras, late 1100s. Creator: Unknown

Frieze with Apsaras, late 1100s. Celestial dancers, with their legs drawn up to indicate that they are flying in space, enliven this architectural panel from the Bayon, the main state temple of the Khmer empire. The Bayon was conceived like a pantheon, housing all the divinities worshipped in the territories governed by the Khmer kingdom under King Jayavarman VII, who reigned from 1181 to 1218 across territories in present-day Cambodia and parts of Thailand and Vietnam. At various times in its history, the temple was dedicated to either the Buddha or to the Hindu god Shiva--the central icon in the sanctum was changed accordingly. Ambiguity of sectarian affiliation and the merging and changing of deities was a common occurrence in Cambodian religious practice

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing "Frieze with Apsaras" from the late 1100s. Created by an unknown artist, this architectural panel originates from the Bayon, the magnificent state temple of the Khmer empire. The celestial dancers depicted in this frieze are portrayed with their legs drawn up, symbolizing their ethereal flight through space. The Bayon temple was conceived as a pantheon, housing all the revered deities worshipped within the vast territories governed by King Jayavarman VII during his reign from 1181 to 1218. These territories encompassed present-day Cambodia and parts of Thailand and Vietnam. Interestingly, throughout its history, this sacred site alternated between being dedicated to either Buddha or Shiva, depending on prevailing religious practices at different times. Consequently, alterations were made to accommodate these changes in worship. The ambiguity surrounding sectarian affiliation and fluidity in deity representation were common occurrences within Cambodian religious traditions. This cultural phenomenon is beautifully captured in this sandstone sculpture that now resides at The Cleveland Museum of Art. Through this remarkable image captured by Heritage Art/Heritage Images, we are transported back in time to witness not only artistic mastery but also gain insight into ancient spiritual beliefs and practices that shaped Cambodia's rich heritage.
