EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 16th century, specifically to the Foundation Sancti-Spiritus in Cuba. Established by Diego Velazquez, this historic town was founded in the same year as Trinidad, in 1514. By 1550, it had flourished into a vibrant community with 400 inhabitants. However, its peaceful existence was shattered when Frenchman Philip Le Grand attacked Sancti-Spiritus in 1605, leaving it on the brink of destruction. The resilience of its people prevailed though, and they rebuilt their beloved town from the ashes. The Foundation's restoration efforts were carried out by Fernandez de Oviedo, whose dedication ensured that Sancti-Spiritus would rise again. This cigar card from the History of Cuba series serves as a testament to both its rich history and Cuban culture. As we gaze upon this monochrome image captured during the 1920s, we are transported to a hillside location where time seems suspended. It reminds us of how colonialism shaped North and Central America during this era. Let this print be a reminder of our past and an invitation to explore further into history's depths. May it inspire curiosity about those who came before us and appreciation for their enduring legacy in places like Sancti-Spiritus – a true gem nestled within Cuba's enchanting countryside.
