The Fitting, 1890-1891. Creator: Mary Cassatt (American, 1844-1926)
The Fitting, 1890-1891. Cassatt approached the suite of ten colour prints as an oil painter would-scraping off drypoint and aquatint areas on the plate if they did not please her, and varying the palette of each impression. The process was a laborious one-she worked out the design in drypoint on one plate, then transferred it to one or two other plates that were used for aquatint. Using commercial printers ink, she mixed the colours herself and " painted" the plate before each impression, using a technique known as a la poupee. Working in this way, she could achieve different effects in each impression, making each print unique. The Fitting is an excellent example of Cassatts different colour combinations. For the Impressionists, fashion represented the transience, spectacle, and exchange of commodities in the bustling city of Paris. Cassatt-who herself loved luxurious clothes-used fashion in her art as a symbol of modernity, class, and feminine beauty. The graceful forms of her figures, the embodiment of Parisian chic, were not nymphs or goddesses, but entirely modern women

EDITORS COMMENTS
by Mary Cassatt is a remarkable print that showcases the artist's unique approach to color and technique. Cassatt, known for her mastery in oil painting, applied the same meticulousness to her suite of ten color prints. In this laborious process, Cassatt would scrape off drypoint and aquatint areas on the plate if they did not meet her artistic standards. She also varied the palette for each impression, ensuring that no two prints were alike. By mixing commercial printers ink herself and using a technique called "a la poupee" she painted the plate before every impression. "The Fitting" exemplifies Cassatt's experimentation with different color combinations. For Impressionists like her, fashion symbolized the transient nature of Parisian life - its spectacle and exchange of commodities. As someone who appreciated luxurious clothing herself, Cassatt used fashion as a means to depict modernity, class, and feminine beauty in her art. The figures in "The Fitting" exude gracefulness and embody Parisian chic. They are not mythical nymphs or goddesses but entirely modern women who represent the bustling city's contemporary ideals of elegance. Through this print, Mary Cassatt captures both the allure of fashionable attire and its significance within society at that time. This print from Heritage Art/Heritage Images allows us to appreciate Mary Cassatt's skillful manipulation of colors while providing insight into how she utilized fashion as a powerful symbol in her artwork.
