Drinking in the Moonlight, late 1100s-early 1200s. Creator: Ma Yuan (Chinese, c. 1150-after 1255)

Drinking in the Moonlight, late 1100s-early 1200s. In the lower left corner, a figure leans back to gaze at the moon appearing between mountain peaks in the upper right. On the rocky deserted platform beneath a cliff, a piece of paper with calligraphy is spread out. A brush and ink stick rest on a stand, ink stone and water dropper placed aside. Asymmetrical compositions are characteristic of the court artist Ma Yuan and his followers. The diagonal division into solid land mass and open space gave rise to his nickname " One-corner Ma."

Drinking in the Moonlight, late 1100s-early 1200s

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that transports us to ancient China during the Southern Song Dynasty. Created by Ma Yuan, a renowned court artist of his time, this artwork showcases his signature style and attention to detail. In this mesmerizing scene, we are drawn to the lower left corner where a figure leans back in contemplation, gazing at the moon as it emerges between majestic mountain peaks in the upper right. The serene atmosphere is enhanced by the rocky deserted platform beneath a cliff, where a piece of calligraphy paper lies spread out. The meticulous arrangement of objects adds depth and symbolism to the composition. A brush and ink stick rest on an elegant stand while an ink stone and water dropper are carefully placed aside. These tools hint at artistic creation and intellectual pursuits that were highly valued during this period. Ma Yuan's unique approach to asymmetrical compositions shines through in "Drinking in the Moonlight". The diagonal division between solid land mass and open space creates visual interest while earning him his nickname "One-corner Ma". This exquisite painting on silk captures not only Ma Yuan's mastery but also represents Chinese heritage art from centuries ago. Preserved by The Cleveland Museum of Art, it serves as a testament to China's rich cultural legacy for generations to come.
