The Cloudmaker Mountain, c1912, (1913). Artist: Henry Bowers
The Cloudmaker Mountain, c1912, (1913). The explorers set up camp under the imposing shadow of the Cloudmaker. When approaching this mountain, Scott speaks in his journal of the worst part of the glacier to come... this worst part including steep slopes and ice-falls, pressure ridges and crevassed areas. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring Cloudmaker Mountain, taken in 1912 by artist Henry Bowers during the Terra Nova Expedition. The explorers' camp is nestled beneath this imposing peak, casting a shadow that seems to touch the heavens. As they approached this majestic mountain, Captain Robert Falcon Scott noted in his journal the treacherous challenges that lay ahead - steep slopes, ice-falls, pressure ridges, and crevassed areas. The Terra Nova Expedition was an ambitious scientific endeavor led by Scott himself. Departing from London in June 1910 with a diverse team of experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers and more; their mission was twofold: to continue their scientific research in Antarctica and to be the first to reach the South Pole. However, upon reaching their long-awaited destination on January 17th, 1912 - after enduring blizzards and dwindling supplies - they were met with crushing disappointment. Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen's expedition had beaten them to claim victory at the South Pole just a month earlier. Tragically delayed by harsh weather conditions and running out of provisions during their return journey, Scott and his remaining team members perished at the end of March. It would take eight months before their bodies and diaries were discovered. This poignant image serves as a reminder of both human resilience and nature's unforgiving power – encapsulating both triumphs achieved against all odds as well as heartbreaking losses suffered amidst untamed landscapes.
