Capping of Doctors of Medicine, at Edinburgh, 1845. Creator: Unknown

Capping of Doctors of Medicine, at Edinburgh, 1845. Graduation ceremony for Scottish medical students: A large and brilliant auditory was closely packed in the amphitheatre; and, as it chiefly consisted of the personal friends, male and female, of the successful candidates for honours, great interest in the proceedings was manifested...The gentleman whose name stood first on the list announced, he advanced to the President, who, placing a round velvet cap on his head, addressed him, saying, " Ego te Doctorem Medicines creo" (I create you a Doctor of Medicine). He then removed the cap; and, from that moment, the Graduate became an M.D. - in testimony of which the President presented him with his diploma, rolled up in a neat tin case. Women were prevented from qualifying as doctors. From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of Scottish medical education. Taken at Edinburgh in 1845, it depicts the capping ceremony for Doctors of Medicine, an event that marked the culmination of years of hard work and study for these aspiring physicians. The amphitheatre is filled to capacity with a large and enthusiastic audience, comprised mainly of friends and family members eager to witness their loved ones' achievements. The atmosphere is charged with excitement as each successful candidate approaches the President to receive their well-deserved recognition. In this particular image, we see a distinguished gentleman whose name tops the list. As he steps forward, the President places a round velvet cap on his head while uttering the words "Ego te Doctorem Medicines creo" - I create you a Doctor of Medicine. With this simple act, accompanied by the removal of his cap, this graduate officially becomes an M. D. , forever marked as an accomplished medical professional. It's important to note that during this era women were not permitted to qualify as doctors; hence they are absent from this photograph. Nevertheless, despite such limitations imposed by society at that time, this image stands as testament to both academic achievement and progress in medicine. Preserved through time in its original form within a neat tin case alongside their diploma presented by the President himself; these graduates can look back upon this momentous occasion with pride knowing they have joined an esteemed profession dedicated to healing and scientific advancement.
