The Calumny of Apelles, 1560. Creator: Giorgio Ghisi (Italian, 1520-1582)
The Calumny of Apelles, 1560. This allegory of injustice is based on a written description of a lost painting by the ancient Greek artist Apelles (active about 300s BC). An enthroned judge with large ears is flanked by Suspicion and blindfolded Ignorance. He extends a hand to Calumny (Slander), who, helped by Envy, drags a young man by the hair into court. This youth lifts his hands in supplication, protesting his innocence to Truth and Time, who descend on a cloud to reveal Calumnys lies and vindicate the wrongly accused. Deceit stands behind Calumny with a large net, while Repentance casts an apologetic glance toward Truth from beside the window. This subject was popular with Renaissance artists for its moral content and also because of its applicability to debates over the value of art and worth of individual artists. According to a legend propagated by Lucian (AD 120-after 180), the genius of Apelles invited the jealousy of one of his rivals, who slanderously accused him of instigating a local rebellion. In danger of prosecution, a friend spoke on Apelless behalf, stating that the artist was not connected with the revolt. Although the rival was subsequently punished, an embittered Apelles allegedly created this allegorical scene as retribution for the unfair treatment

The Calumny of Apelles, 1560
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that brings to life an ancient Greek allegory of injustice. Created by Italian artist Giorgio Ghisi, this artwork is based on a lost painting by the renowned artist Apelles from the 300s BC. The scene unfolds with an enthroned judge, distinguished by his large ears, flanked by Suspicion and blindfolded Ignorance. In front of him stands Calumny (Slander), aided by Envy, dragging a young man into court while he desperately pleads his innocence to Truth and Time descending on a cloud. The lies of Calumny are exposed as Deceit lurks behind with a net, and Repentance gazes apologetically at Truth from beside the window. This subject matter was popular among Renaissance artists due to its moral implications and relevance in debates about art's value and individual artists' worth. Legend has it that Apelles himself faced slanderous accusations instigated by a jealous rival who accused him of inciting rebellion. Despite being proven innocent through the testimony of a friend, Apelles allegedly created this allegorical masterpiece as retribution for the unfair treatment he endured. "The Calumny of Apelles" serves as both an artistic triumph and a timeless reminder of the consequences unjust accusations can have on individuals' lives. This print captures every intricate detail crafted by Giorgio Ghisi, allowing viewers to appreciate not only its aesthetic beauty but also its profound narrative significance.
