Cabinet card of Gideon Welles, 1860-1878. Creator: Mathew Brady
This cabinet card depicts Gideon Welles on a Mathew Brady mount. Welles (1802-1878) was the United States Secretary of the Navy from 1861 to 1869. Although opposed to the Union blockade of Southern ports, he carried out his part of the Anaconda Plan, largely sealing off the Confederate coastline and preventing the exchange of cotton for war supplies. This is viewed as a major cause of Union victory in the American Civil War. Shown from the waist up, he wears a black frock coat and waistcoat over a white shirt. A pocket watch chain T-bar is visible in one buttonhole. There is text at the bottom left corner of the card mount that reads " Brady, Photo, New York." The reverse of the card mount has text that reads " Imperial Carte de Visite, / by/ BRADY/ NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY/ No. 785 Broadway, / New York, / 627 Pennsylvania Avenue, / Washington, / D. C."

EDITORS COMMENTS
This cabinet card captures the image of Gideon Welles, a prominent figure in American history. Serving as the United States Secretary of the Navy from 1861 to 1869, Welles played a crucial role in shaping the outcome of the American Civil War. Despite initially opposing the Union blockade of Southern ports, he dutifully executed his part in the Anaconda Plan, effectively sealing off Confederate coastlines and impeding their access to vital war supplies. In this portrait, Welles is depicted from waist up, exuding an air of authority and determination. He dons a black frock coat and waistcoat over a crisp white shirt, projecting an aura of sophistication and professionalism. Notably visible is a pocket watch chain T-bar adorning one buttonhole – perhaps symbolizing his commitment to punctuality and precision. The meticulous craftsmanship evident in Mathew Brady's mount further enhances this historical artifact's allure. The bottom left corner bears text that proudly declares "Brady Photo New York" while on its reverse side reads "Imperial Carte de Visite by BRADY NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY". These inscriptions serve as testaments to Brady's renowned reputation as a masterful photographer during that era. Preserved within this photograph lies not only Gideon Welles' likeness but also an invaluable glimpse into America's past. It stands as both a testament to our nation's triumphs during times of adversity and an homage to those who shaped its destiny.
