Berthe Morisot, c. 1869-73. Creator: Edouard Manet (French, 1832-1883)
Berthe Morisot, c. 1869-73. This painting depicts Impressionist painter Berthe Morisot (1841-1895), who began working closely with Edouard Manet around 1868. She married Manets brother Eugene in 1874. Manet painted Morisots portrait several times, at first presenting her in static poses with neatly styled hair. About 1872 he began painting her in more momentary, fleeting states. In this painting she appears to be moving, her hair disheveled as she throws a furtive glance to the side. Manets sketchy brushwork gives the painting a daring unfinished look, suggesting the tempo of modern life. Morisots pensive, nervous expression suggests that Manet was sympathetic to her struggle for recognition at a time when women were not expected to pursue professional careers. Indeed, Morisots parents were urging her to settle down to a more conventional life at the time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Edouard Manet's renowned painting, "Berthe Morisot, c. 1869-73". The artwork portrays the talented Impressionist painter Berthe Morisot, who had a close artistic relationship with Manet starting from around 1868. In 1874, she married Eugene Manet, the brother of her mentor and friend. Manet depicted Morisot in various portraits over time, initially capturing her in static poses with meticulously styled hair. However, around 1872 he began portraying her in more fleeting moments. This particular painting captures Morisot seemingly in motion; her disheveled hair and furtive glance to the side convey a sense of movement and spontaneity. The sketchy brushwork employed by Manet adds an audacious unfinished quality to the piece that reflects the tempo of modern life during that era. Morisot's pensive and nervous expression suggests that Manet empathized with her struggle for recognition as a female artist at a time when women were not expected to pursue professional careers. It is worth noting that during this period, Morisot's parents were pressuring her to conform to societal expectations and lead a more conventional life. This remarkable artwork represents both the realism associated with Impressionism and Manet's ability to capture intimate moments filled with emotion. With its historical significance and artistic brilliance, this print serves as an exquisite tribute to two influential figures in French art history - Edouard Manet and Berthe Morisot.
