Attack on Sidon by Commodore Charles Napier, 26 September 1840 (c1857)
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a significant moment in history during the Syrian War. Painted by George Greatbatch, it depicts the intense bombardment of Egyptian positions in the Lebanese port of Sidon. The war erupted after Maronite Christians rebelled against occupying Egyptian forces that had invaded Syria. In this scene, British, Turkish, and Austrian ships join forces to unleash their firepower upon the enemy. Among them are prominent vessels like HMS Gorgon and HMS Stromboli, steam paddle frigates that dominate the foreground with their imposing presence. The powerful 84-gun second-rate ship HMS Thunderer stands tall alongside the smaller but agile brig HMS Wasp. Completing this formidable alliance is an Austrian frigate called Guerriera and a Turkish corvette. The backdrop showcases a stunning seascape with mountains towering majestically behind them. This clash between naval powers symbolizes not only military might but also strategic alliances forged during times of conflict. George Greatbatch's masterful engraving brings this historical event to life with its intricate details and monochromatic beauty. It was featured in Lieutenant Colonel William Freke Williams' book "England's Battles by Sea and Land" published in 1857. This remarkable artwork serves as both a testament to human resilience and a reminder of how nations united can overcome adversity for a greater cause.
