The Apocalypse: Satan Bound for a Thousand Years, 1546-1555. Creator: Jean Duvet (French

The Apocalypse: Satan Bound for a Thousand Years, 1546-1555. This print is part of a bound volume of works illustrating the a narrative of the Apocalypse, taken from the Revelation of Saint John in the Bible. The 23 engravings in the series occupied the artist for a number of years and represent his greatest artistic achievement. The museums volume is one of only seven known complete sets. Jean Duvet was one of the first major printmakers in France and one of the most original artists of the 1500s. Although he worked mostly in the provincial city of Langres, he became aware of Italian art through the circulation of prints--notably those of Marcantonio Raimondi. His solidly modeled human figures reflect the influence of the Italian High Renaissance. Duvet, however, developed an idiosyncratic, highly artificial style with crowded compositions that ignore rational space in favor of ornamental surface patterns

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Jean Duvet's masterpiece, "The Apocalypse: Satan Bound for a Thousand Years" created between 1546 and 1555. The print is part of a rare bound volume that illustrates the narrative of the Apocalypse, derived from the Revelation of Saint John in the Bible. With its intricate engravings, this series represents Duvet's greatest artistic achievement and took him several years to complete. Only seven complete sets of this remarkable work are known to exist, making it an extraordinary find within museum collections. Jean Duvet was not only one of France's first prominent printmakers but also one of the most innovative artists during the 16th century. Although he primarily worked in Langres, a provincial city, his exposure to Italian art through circulated prints influenced his style greatly. Duvet's figures possess solid modeling reminiscent of the Italian High Renaissance; however, he developed a distinct and highly artificial approach characterized by crowded compositions that disregard rational space in favor of ornamental surface patterns. This unique style adds depth and complexity to his artwork while capturing viewers' attention with its mesmerizing intricacy. Heritage Art/Heritage Images has beautifully captured this stunning print that allows us to appreciate Duvet's exceptional talent and contribution to art history.
