EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a group of men in Avrik, possibly Iraq, proudly identifying themselves as the Ak Koyunlu Turks of Uzun Hassan. Taken between 1906 and 1913 by Lt. -Col. Sir Mark Sykes, this image offers a glimpse into the rich history of the Aq Qoyunlu or White Sheep Turkomans. The Ak Koyunlu Turks were a tribal confederation that once held dominion over vast territories encompassing present-day Eastern Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iran, and Iraq. Their distinctive headdresses and turbans add an air of regality to their presence in the photograph. Lt. -Col. Sir Mark Sykes was not only an accomplished photographer but also a renowned historian who authored "The Caliphs Last Heritage: A Short History of the Turkish Empire". Published by Macmillan & Co in London in 1915, his work sheds light on the legacy left behind by these formidable Turkic tribes. As we gaze upon this portrait frozen in time, we are transported to an era when empires rose and fell across the Middle East. The solemn expressions on their faces hint at stories untold - tales of conquests won and lost amidst shifting political landscapes. This print serves as both a testament to Sir Mark Sykes' keen eye for capturing cultural heritage and as a window into the vibrant tapestry that is Turkish history. It reminds us that beneath every historical account lies countless individuals whose lives shaped our world today.
