EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodblock print, created by the renowned artist Shunsho in the mid-18th century, showcases two prominent Kabuki actors of Japan - Nakamura Nakazo I as Taira no Kiyomori and Yamashita Kinsaku II as Tokiwa Gozen. The scene is taken from the play "Nue no Mori Ichiyo no Mato," which was performed at the Nakamura Theater in the eleventh month of 1770. Nakamura Nakazo I, depicted on the right, masterfully portrays Taira no Kiyomori, a powerful and ambitious Heike clan leader. His beige kimono, adorned with intricate patterns, and his serious expression convey the character's authority and determination. On the left, Yamashita Kinsaku II, as Tokiwa Gozen, the loyal wife of Taira no Kiyomori, is dressed in a stunning green kimono. The vibrant color symbolizes her purity and devotion. Her elegant posture and the delicate folds of her clothing emphasize the grace and femininity of the character. This exquisite print is a testament to the artistic school of Katsukawa, particularly the works of Katsukawa Shunsho and Katsumiyagawa Yusuke. It offers a glimpse into the world of Edo period entertainment, where drama, fashion, and art intertwined, and where actors like Nakamura Nakazo I and Yamashita Kinsaku II brought characters to life, captivating audiences with their performances.
