London Bridge, Lake Havasu City, Arizona
In 1962, London Bridge was falling down. Built in 1831, the bridge couldn t handle the ever-increasing flow of traffic across the Thames River. The British government decided to put the bridge up for sale, and Robert McCulloch, Founder of Lake Havasu City, Arizona, and Chairman of McCulloch Oil Corporation, submitted the winning bid of $2, 460, 000.
The bridge was dismantled, and each stone was numbered. Everything was shipped 10, 000 miles to Long Beach, California, and then trucked to Lake Havasu City. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic London Bridge standing proudly in an unexpected location - Lake Havasu City, Arizona. The story behind this remarkable sight dates back to 1962 when the original bridge in London was deemed unfit for the increasing traffic demands. Seizing a unique opportunity, Robert McCulloch, Founder of Lake Havasu City and Chairman of McCulloch Oil Corporation, won the bid to purchase the historic structure for $2,460,000. The meticulous process of relocating this architectural marvel began with its careful dismantling and numbering of each stone. Transporting these pieces over 10,000 miles from England to Long Beach, California was no small feat. From there, they were trucked to their final destination in Lake Havasu City. Reconstruction commenced on September 23rd, 1968 amidst great fanfare that included a cornerstone-laying ceremony attended by none other than the Lord Mayor of London himself. Finally completed on October 10th, 1971, this magnificent bridge became a symbol of transatlantic history and friendship. In Sura Ark's photograph captured at sunset against the backdrop of Lake Havasu's serene waters and clear blue skies; we witness both history preserved and nature's beauty intertwined harmoniously. This image serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination while reminding us that even bridges can find new life across continents.
