Last To Leave

11th July 1953: Dogs wait to join the inhabitants of the Isle of Soay in the Outer Hebrides, who have been evacuated to new homes on the Isle of Mull. The dogs will be the last to leave the island. All 27 islanders are being moved by the government after their crops failed and the income from fishing had dwindled. The island has been bought by Tex and Jeanne Geddes who hope to revitalise the land. Last To Leave - A Captivating Tale of Resilience and Renewal

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, captured by the talented Haywood Magee, we are transported back to the 11th of July in 1953. The image showcases a group of loyal dogs patiently waiting on a desolate beach, their eyes fixed on the horizon. These faithful companions belong to the inhabitants of the Isle of Soay in the Outer Hebrides, who have been forced to evacuate their beloved island due to failed crops and dwindling fishing income. All 27 islanders have already departed for new homes on the Isle of Mull, leaving behind an empty land filled with memories. However, these devoted canines remain steadfastly loyal until they too can bid farewell to their ancestral home. Their unwavering presence symbolizes both hope and melancholy as they become the last living beings to leave Soay. The once vibrant isle has now been purchased by Tex and Jeanne Geddes, who aspire to breathe new life into its barren landscapes. With dreams of revitalizing this remote corner of Scotland, they embark on a journey that holds promise for both humans and animals alike. This poignant photograph not only captures a moment frozen in time but also serves as a testament to human resilience and our deep connection with nature's creatures. As we gaze upon these patient dogs awaiting departure from their cherished homeland, we are reminded that even amidst adversity there is always room for renewal and transformation.
