Fatty Arbuckle

circa 1920: American actor, director and screenwriter Fatty Arbuckle (1887 - 1933) with Luke the dog. Born Roscoe Conkling Arbuckle, he was a member of Mack Sennetts Keystone Kops and starred in silent films. He owned his own production company and gave Buster Keaton a start. Arbuckles Hollywood career was cut short by scandal. Returning some years later as a director under the pseudonym of William B Goodrich, he directed Eddie Cantors first two films. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the legendary Fatty Arbuckle, a prominent figure in the early days of American cinema. Taken around 1920, it captures Arbuckle's charismatic presence alongside his beloved companion, Luke the dog. Born Roscoe Conkling Arbuckle, he gained fame as an actor, director, and screenwriter during the silent film era. Known for his comedic talent and larger-than-life personality, Arbuckle was a member of Mack Sennett's Keystone Kops and starred in numerous silent films. He even established his own production company where he discovered and mentored future comedy icon Buster Keaton. Unfortunately, Arbuckle's flourishing Hollywood career came to an abrupt halt due to scandalous allegations that tarnished his reputation. However, after several years away from the limelight, he made a comeback as a director under the pseudonym William B Goodrich. During this period, he directed Eddie Cantor's first two films. This remarkable portrait not only captures Fatty Arbuckle at the height of his fame but also serves as a reminder of his significant contributions to early American cinema. It is a testament to both his undeniable talent as well as the challenges he faced throughout his tumultuous career.
