Horse And Carriage July 1909

Riding out in style in their Park Drag & Fours during the London Season. The idea was that the rich rode on the outside while their servants sat inside. It all started back in the pre-railway days when children were packed off to Eton on the stage coach and got their thrills by sitting up next to the coachman. When they grew up and took up four-in-hand driving, of course everyone who was anyone wanted to sit outside to see and be seen.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Riding out in style, the Horse and Carriage of July 1909 captures the essence of London's high society during the renowned London Season. This exquisite print showcases a Park Drag & Fours carriage, symbolizing an era when social status was flaunted through extravagant modes of transportation. Intriguingly, this tradition originated from a time before railways dominated travel. Wealthy children were sent off to prestigious schools like Eton on stagecoaches, finding delight in sitting beside the coachman. As they grew older and embraced four-in-hand driving, it became a coveted privilege for everyone who mattered to be seen seated outside these luxurious carriages. The image by W. G. Phillips transports us back to that era with its timeless charm. The symmetry of the composition highlights both male and female figures elegantly dressed, basking in their opulence as they traverse the bustling streets of London. This archival photograph not only demonstrates an iconic mode of transport but also reflects British culture at its peak. It encapsulates a moment frozen in time when finance and transportation intertwined seamlessly with societal norms. As we gaze upon this scene, we are reminded of how history has shaped our present-day perceptions while appreciating the artistry captured by W. G. Phillips' lens.
