EDITORS COMMENTS
This watercolour print showcases the historic police office of Bow Street in 1825. The image transports us back to a time when this iconic building served as the original hub for law enforcement in Covent Garden, London. Standing proudly beside the entrance to the court room is Johnsons Oyster Warehouse, adding a touch of everyday life to this scene. The significance of this location cannot be overstated, as it was here that Thomas De Veil, a justice of the peace, established an office in 1740. This marked the birthplace of London's first professional police force in 1749 under Henry Fielding, who was not only a magistrate but also an esteemed author. These early officers became known as Bow Street runners and played a crucial role in maintaining order and combating crime until their disbandment in 1839. The painting captures both the grandeur and simplicity of Georgian architecture with its elegant shop fronts lining Bow Street. It serves as a reminder that justice was dispensed within these walls while bustling city life continued outside. This remarkable artwork offers us a glimpse into history - an era where thief takers roamed alongside magistrates seeking reform and courtroom dramas unfolded daily. It encapsulates not just one building but also symbolizes London's evolving approach towards policing and punishment during this transformative period.
