EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the sword belonging to Lieutenant (later Major) William Hodson, dating back to 1855. The English School of the 19th century beautifully captured this piece, which is now housed in the National Army Museum in London. Lieutenant Hodson played a significant role during the Indian Mutiny from 1857-1859. He raised an irregular cavalry force known as "Hodson's Horse" and served as head of the intelligence department during the siege of Delhi. His spies provided crucial information about events within the city and British artillery damage. A skilled swordsman who relished personal combat, Hodson favored a sword that closely resembled the enlisted men's 1821 pattern weapon. This particular design featured a heavy guard and leather grip, which he preferred over standard officers' swords. Tragically, Hodson met his demise during an attack on Lucknow on March 11th, 1858. However, his legacy lives on through this remarkable sword that symbolizes his bravery and dedication to serving in armed forces. Bridgeman Images has expertly preserved this historical artifact through their fine art photography expertise. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded of Lieutenant William Hodson's valiant contributions to history and honor those who have fought for their countries throughout time.
