Lady Gough, wearing the Maharajpoor Star, one of four ladies who received this decoration

5925033 Lady Gough, wearing the Maharajpoor Star, one of four ladies who received this decoration for being present at the battle on 29 December 1843 (oil on board) by Unknown Artist, (19th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Lady Gough, wearing the Maharajpoor Star, one of four ladies who received this decoration for being present at the battle on 29 December 1843.
Oil on board, artist unknown, 1843 circa.
The other ladies present were Lady Smith, wife of Sir Harry; Mrs Curtis; and Miss Gough (later Lady Grant). Sir Hugh and Lady Gough were married in 1807; she died in 1865, and the portrait is dated with the assumption that she was at least 20 when she married and so would have been 56 or so in 1843; her hair is still brown [however, the head is one of the areas which has been greatly retouched].); eNational Army Museum; out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures Lady Gough, adorned with the prestigious Maharajpoor Star, a decoration she received for her presence at the historic battle on 29 December 1843. Painted by an unknown artist in the 19th century, this oil on board masterpiece now resides in the National Army Museum in London. Lady Gough is one of four remarkable women who were honored with this decoration. Alongside her stand Lady Smith, wife of Sir Harry; Mrs Curtis; and Miss Gough, later known as Lady Grant. The portrait serves as a testament to their bravery and resilience during that fateful battle. Sir Hugh and Lady Gough's union began in 1807, but sadly she passed away in 1865. Based on assumptions about her age at marriage, it is believed that she would have been approximately 56 years old when this painting was created. Although much retouching has occurred over time, her hair still retains its youthful brown hue. The image not only showcases the beauty and elegance of Lady Gough but also highlights the significant role played by women in society during times of conflict. It symbolizes their unwavering support for their loved ones on the battlefield and their own contributions to history. Bridgeman Images presents this extraordinary piece from Fine Art Finder as a timeless reminder of courage, honor, and the indomitable spirit of these remarkable women who left an indelible mark on our collective memory.
