5922953 Infantry, 2nd West India Regiment (w/c over pencil) by Simkin, Richard (1840-1926); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Infantry, 2nd West India Regiment, 1876.
Watercolour over pencil by Richard Simkin, 1876.
This watercolour depicts a West Indian corporal in review order and a British officer in undress uniform. Until 1858 the West India Regiment wore a uniform similar to British line infantry, but in that year this was replaced with a A ZouaveA style uniform that included a white waistcoat and turban, scarlet jacket, blue trousers and white gaiters. Officers continued to wear British-style uniform. The regiment was the only British Army unit to wear A ZouaveA uniform, although some colonial troops, including the Gold Coast Hausas, also adopted it.); eNational Army Museum; English, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the artwork titled "Infantry, 2nd West India Regiment (w/c over pencil)" by Richard Simkin. Created in 1876, this watercolour over pencil painting offers a glimpse into the distinctive uniforms worn by members of the regiment during that era. The image portrays a West Indian corporal standing alongside a British officer. The corporal is seen dressed in review order, donning an eye-catching A ZouaveA style uniform. This unique attire includes a scarlet jacket, blue trousers, white gaiters, and a turban atop his head. It's worth noting that until 1858, the West India Regiment wore uniforms similar to those of British line infantry. In contrast to the corporal's flamboyant outfit, the British officer can be seen wearing undress uniform which adheres more closely to traditional British military attire. The significance of this painting lies in its depiction of one of Britain's most distinct regiments at that time. The West India Regiment was renowned for being the only unit within the British Army to adopt such an exotic uniform style inspired by Zouave soldiers. Richard Simkin skillfully captures this historical moment through his detailed brushwork and use of vibrant colors. This print serves as both an artistic masterpiece and valuable documentation of military history from over a century ago.
