EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print titled "13th Bengal Lancers, circa 1914" showcases the remarkable watercolour drawing by Christopher Clark. This artwork, housed in the National Army Museum in London, depicts a group of soldiers from the esteemed 13th (Duke of Connaught's) Regiment of Bengal Lancers. Originating during the Indian Mutiny in 1857-1859 as an irregular cavalry force, this unit evolved into the 13th Regiment of Bengal Cavalry in 1861. Throughout its history, it valiantly fought in significant conflicts such as the 2nd Afghan War and the Egyptian War of 1882. Intriguingly, in honor of its Colonel-in-Chief, the Duke of Connaught, this regiment adopted his name in 1884. The watercolour drawing beautifully captures these distinguished soldiers dressed impeccably in their lancer uniforms. Every detail is meticulously portrayed - from their striking headgear to their finely crafted weapons. The officers exude authority and confidence while standing alongside their loyal troops who are ready for any challenge that may come their way. This historic image serves as a testament to not only the bravery and dedication displayed by these men but also to their unwavering commitment to serving their country. It provides us with a glimpse into a time when cavalry regiments played an essential role on battlefields across continents.
