Confederate 32-pounder cannon and militia gunners overlooking the entrance into Pensacola
834316 Confederate 32-pounder cannon and militia gunners overlooking the entrance into Pensacola Bay, Florida, prior to the American Civil War, March 1861 (b/w photo) by American Photographer, (19th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Confederate militiamen in recently-issued uniforms, posing around an M.1829 32-pounder seacoast gun mounted atop a barbette-carriage in a sandbagged emplacement, somewhere along the western shorelines of Pensacola Bay, Florida, ca. March 1861. This scene was most probably photographed and subsequently published as a salted paper photo-print by J. D. [Jay Dearborn] Edwards, a photographer from New Orleans, and may well have been included among a series of 39 such prints offered for sale in that Louisiana city as of May 15, 1861. The original collodion glass-negative is apparently lost, but a print was republished years afterward on Pages 16-17 of Volume 6: The Navies in the Photographic History of the Civil War (New York: Review of Reviews, 1911), edited by Francis T. Miller and Robert S. Lanier. This latter version has been melded together into a single image, then repaired and cleaned up by Battlefields in Motion, Ltd.); Battlefields in Motion, Ltd.; American, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a significant moment in American history. Taken by an anonymous 19th-century American photographer, the image showcases a Confederate 32-pounder cannon and militia gunners overlooking the entrance into Pensacola Bay, Florida, prior to the outbreak of the American Civil War in March 1861. The scene depicts Confederate militiamen proudly posing around an M. 1829 32-pounder seacoast gun mounted atop a barbette-carriage in a sandbagged emplacement along the western shorelines of Pensacola Bay. The recently-issued uniforms worn by these brave soldiers add to their sense of determination and readiness for battle. Believed to have been photographed by J. D. Edwards, a renowned New Orleans-based photographer, this print offers us a glimpse into one of the many fortified positions that were established during this tumultuous period in American history. Although the original collodion glass-negative is lost to time, this particular print was republished years later as part of "The Navies" series within "The Photographic History of the Civil War". Thanks to meticulous restoration work carried out by Battlefields in Motion Ltd. , we can now appreciate every detail captured within this historic image. As we gaze upon it today, let us remember those who fought valiantly on both sides during this divisive conflict that forever shaped our nation's destiny.
