In the concluding scene Tom Rakewell has descended into madness and is now in Bethlem (Bedlam) Hospital. He is surrounded by other inmates who are suffering various delusions. These include a tailor, a musician, an astronomer and an archbishop. In the door to one of the cells is a man who thinks he is a king - he is naked and carries a straw crown and sceptre. Like the real Bedlam, Hogarths Madhouse is open to the public. Two fashionable ladies have come to observe the poor suffering lunatics as one of the sights of the town. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Plate 8,1st State of "A Rakes Progress" by William Hogarth. The scene depicts the tragic downfall of Tom Rakewell, who has now descended into madness and finds himself confined in Bethlem (Bedlam) Hospital. Surrounding him are fellow inmates, each suffering from their own delusions - a tailor, a musician, an astronomer, and even an archbishop. One particularly striking figure stands at the cell door believing himself to be a king; he is naked except for a straw crown and sceptre. Hogarth's portrayal of Bedlam mirrors its real-life counterpart as it was open to the public during that time period. In this image, two fashionable ladies have come to witness the spectacle of suffering lunatics as one of the town's attractions. Amidst this misery and hardship sits Sarah Young faithfully by Tom's side, weeping for his plight. The photograph beautifully captures the chilling atmosphere within the asylum walls with its cold surroundings and shivering inhabitants. It offers us a glimpse into Georgian society's fascination with insanity as entertainment while also highlighting the harsh reality faced by those afflicted with mental illness. Displayed at Dallas Museum of Art in Texas, USA, this engraving serves as both a historical document and an artistic masterpiece that continues to captivate audiences today.
