Two-decker in a gale off shore, late 18th to early 19th century (brown wash)

7341716 Two-decker in a gale off shore, late 18th to early 19th century (brown wash) by Pocock, Nicholas (1741-1821); 15.6x12.6 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Nicholas Pocock; (Samuel Owen?)
This is a fine early 19th century wash drawing but it does not look like Pocock in terms of technique and if the inscription lower right is intended as an artist signature it is certainly false. The artist is more likely to be Samuel Owen (1768/9 -1857), of whom relatively little is known but who was influenced by both Bonington and Turner. EDITORS COMMENTS
This brown wash drawing captures the tumultuous scene of a two-decker ship battling a fierce gale off shore in the late 18th to early 19th century. The artist, believed to be Samuel Owen rather than Nicholas Pocock as previously thought, expertly conveys the sense of danger and risk faced by those on board as they navigate through treacherous waters. The turbulent waves crashing against the hull of the ship create a sense of urgency and uncertainty, while the rowboat in the foreground hints at a desperate attempt to reach safety. The skilled use of shading and detail brings this dramatic maritime scene to life, showcasing both the power of nature and human resilience in the face of adversity. As we gaze upon this historical artwork, we are transported back in time to an era where seafaring was fraught with peril and every voyage was a gamble with fate. The meticulous attention to detail in depicting not only the ship but also its surroundings adds depth and realism to this stunning portrayal of maritime life. This print serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by sailors throughout history and pays tribute to their courage in braving unknown waters. It is a testament to both artistic skill and storytelling ability, capturing a moment frozen in time for generations to come.
