Major Sir Thomas Pearson, 23rd Regiment, 1805 circa. (silhouette)

5919952 Major Sir Thomas Pearson, 23rd Regiment, 1805 circa. (silhouette) by Buncombe, John (fl.1795-1830); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Major Sir Thomas Pearson, 23rd Regiment, 1805 circa.
Miniature silhouette in watercolour on card, probably by John Buncombe, 1805 circa.
Thomas Pearson was commissioned into the 23rd Regiment of Foot as a second-lieutenant in 1796. He took part in General Sir Ralph Abercrombys expeditions to Egypt in 1801, and was wounded in the thigh. In 1804, he was promoted major and rejoined his regiment on the Isle of Wight. It was probably in this year that he sat for this portrait, since the artist John Buncombe lived on the island.
Pearson went on to fight during the Napoleonic Wars and in the American War of 1812. He was knighted in 1835 and promoted Lieutenant-General in 1841, and was Colonel of the 85th Regiment of Foot from 1843.); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This silhouette print showcases Major Sir Thomas Pearson, a distinguished officer of the 23rd Regiment in 1805. Created by artist John Buncombe, this miniature watercolor on card beautifully captures the essence of Pearson's military prowess and stoic demeanor. Commissioned as a second-lieutenant in 1796, Pearson's career was marked by significant achievements and bravery. He played an integral role in General Sir Ralph Abercromby's expeditions to Egypt in 1801, where he sustained a thigh injury while valiantly serving his country. Promoted to major in 1804, Pearson rejoined his regiment stationed on the Isle of Wight. It is believed that this portrait was created around the same time as his promotion since Buncombe resided on the island during that period. This striking image immortalizes Pearson at a pivotal moment in his life when he had already proven himself as an exceptional leader. Pearson continued to demonstrate unwavering courage throughout the Napoleonic Wars and even fought bravely during the American War of 1812. His remarkable service led to him being knighted in 1835 and promoted to Lieutenant-General in 1841. Additionally, he held the esteemed position of Colonel for the renowned 85th Regiment of Foot from 1843 onwards. This extraordinary silhouette print serves as a testament to Major Sir Thomas Pearson's indomitable spirit and enduring legacy within British military history.
