Apothercary was the title given to the various grades of warrant officer in the Indian Military Subordinate Medical Services during the 19th century. They were mainly recruited locally in India and undertook general medical duties. By the early 19th century the word apothecary was used in the more general sense of medical practitioner as well as in its original meaning of pharmacist. The rank was abolished in the Subordinate Medical Service in 1894 and replaced by that of Assistant Surgeon.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Apothecaries of General Roberts Division in 1878. Taken by John Burke during the 2nd Afghan War, this image showcases a group portrait of these medical professionals. The apothecaries were an integral part of the Indian Military Subordinate Medical Services during the 19th century, fulfilling various roles from pharmacist to general medical practitioner. Recruited locally in India, these dedicated individuals played a crucial role in providing healthcare services to soldiers and civilians alike. Their expertise and commitment ensured that medical needs were met efficiently on the battlefield and beyond. The term "apothecary" evolved over time, encompassing both its original meaning as a pharmacist and expanding to include all grades of warrant officers within the Subordinate Medical Service. However, with changing times, this rank was eventually abolished in 1894 and replaced by that of Assistant Surgeon. This photograph is part of an album containing 60 images taken by John Burke. Preserved at the National Army Museum in London, it offers us a glimpse into history while highlighting the importance of these unsung heroes who dedicated their lives to preserving health amidst conflict. Through this image, we are reminded not only of their invaluable contributions but also how medicine has evolved over time. It serves as a testament to their dedication towards serving others and leaves us with admiration for those who have paved the way for modern healthcare practices.
