He designed Central Station (opened 1850) and many of the Greek Revival style buildings along the east side of Grey Street. He also designed country houses in Northumbria. Dobson was also a skilled watercolour painter. He was friendly with the North East portrait painter William Dixon, who probably painted this picture.
