EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Colonel Sir Richard Llewellyn, a distinguished officer of the 28th Regiment of Foot in the year 1835. Painted by an unknown artist during the 19th century, this oil on canvas masterpiece is now housed at the National Army Museum in London. The painting itself is a reproduction of a portrait study originally created by William Salter for his renowned composition titled "The Waterloo Banquet at Apsley House" in 1836. This annual banquet was hosted by the Duke of Wellington, who invited all field officers that had served alongside him during the historic Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Salter meticulously painted numerous portrait studies from life to ensure accurate depictions of each individual attending the banquet. These studies were widely recognized as excellent likenesses and captured not only their physical features but also their personalities. In this particular image, Colonel Sir Richard Llewellyn stands proudly adorned with military medals and decorations while grasping his sword firmly. His commanding presence and dignified expression reflect his esteemed position within the regiment. This print serves as a testament to both Llewellyn's remarkable service to his country and to Salter's exceptional talent as an artist capturing historical moments through portraiture.
