This gelatin silver print captures the Auckland Touring Team of 1883, a group of talented rugby players who made history in New Zealand. The photograph, taken by Wrigglesworth & Binns, showcases the team in all their glory, standing tall and proud. In this black and white portrait, we see the players arranged in four rows. The back row features J. Mearns, T. O Connor, F. Moginie, C. H. Croxton; followed by R. Whiteside, J. Sims, J. Webster, and the captain himself - J Henderson - among others. The third row shows G Carter; Joe Warbrick; P Spencer; R Biggs seated comfortably while the front row consists of J Clayton; J Arneil; J Lecky along with Joseph Warbrick as part of this remarkable team. Joseph Warbrick played a significant role in organizing the famous 1888-89 New Zealand Native football team which consisted mainly of Maori ancestry players that toured Britain, Australia and New Zealand. This historical photograph not only highlights the skillful individuals but also represents an important era for rugby enthusiasts worldwide.
