EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Kings Indian Orderly Officers, 1936" captures a significant moment in history. Taken by renowned photographer C Vandyk, the image showcases a group of distinguished individuals who held prestigious positions as King's Indian Orderly Officers during that time. Established in 1903 by the Viceroy of India, these officers were carefully selected British and Indian personnel appointed annually for the London season. Their duties included attending to the King at court, official engagements, and ceremonies such as Trooping the Colour. In this photograph, we see Major E N Goddard from the 3/12th Frontier Force Regiment standing front and center. Behind him stand Subadar Major Harditt Singh from the 2/11th Sikh Regiment on his left and Subadar Ishar Singh VC from the 4/15th Punjab Regiment on his right. Completing this remarkable lineup are Bhagat Singh from the 1st Battalion Royal Fusiliers on the left side of Major Goddard and Rissaldar Major Narain Singh from Watsons Horse (6th Duke of Connaught's Lancers) on his right. Part of a larger collection spanning several decades between 1903-1938, this photograph offers us a glimpse into an era when tradition met diversity within military ranks. Preserved by eNational Army Museum with copyright-free status granted due to its German origin, it serves as both an artistic masterpiece and historical documentation worth cherishing.
