Captain Alexander McInnes, 2nd Life Guards, 1821 circa (oil on canvas)
5920038 Captain Alexander McInnes, 2nd Life Guards, 1821 circa (oil on canvas) by Reinagle, Ramsay Richard (1775-1862); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Captain Alexander McInnes, 2nd Life Guards, 1821 circa.
Oil on canvas by Ramsay Richard Reinagle (1775-1862).
McInnes, an officer who had served in the Peninsula under Wellington, wears the uniform of the elite Life Guards, one of the two household regiments that acted as the personal bodyguards of the King. The accoutrements of the uniform are not only decorative, but also symbolic, which was necessary in an era before rank badges were worn. For example the gold ropes, or aiguillettes, attached to McInnesAs sash allowed his rank to be identified at a glance. In fact, the uniform worn in this painting is virtually identical to that still worn by the Life Guards when on royal ceremonial duties.
The uniform is very sumptuous, with a gold lace sash, and a
highly polished cuirass lined with lambskin. There were other practical elements to the uniform. The uniform trousers of Guards units were cut very tightly, so a sabretache was substituted for pockets. The sabretache A- a kind of flat, low-slung bag worn only by officers A- can just be seen behind McInnesAs sword.); eNational Army Museum; English, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating portrait captures Captain Alexander McInnes, a distinguished officer of the 2nd Life Guards in 1821. Painted by Ramsay Richard Reinagle, this oil on canvas print showcases McInnes wearing the resplendent uniform of the elite Life Guards, one of the two prestigious household regiments entrusted with safeguarding the King. McInnes's attire is not only ornamental but also symbolic, serving as a means to identify his rank in an era before rank badges were worn. The gold ropes or aiguillettes attached to his sash allow for easy recognition at first glance. Interestingly, the uniform depicted here remains almost identical to that still donned by the Life Guards during royal ceremonial duties. Aesthetically opulent, McInnes's ensemble features a gilded lace sash and a gleaming cuirass lined with lambskin. However, practicality was not overlooked in its design; tight-fitting trousers necessitated substituting pockets with a sabretache – a flat bag slung low and exclusively worn by officers – which can be glimpsed behind McInnes's sword. Captain Alexander McInnes himself exudes an air of authority and experience earned through service under Wellington in the Peninsula. This remarkable painting preserves both his individuality and represents an esteemed military tradition upheld by generations of noble soldiers within the 2nd Life Guards regiment.
