EDITORS COMMENTS
This oil on canvas print, titled "Duke of Friedland (1583-1634) at The Charge of Wallenstein 1632" transports us back to a pivotal moment in history. Painted by Dietz, Feodor in 1839, this artwork measures 97.5x130 cm and is currently housed in a private collection. The subject of the painting is Albrecht Wenzel Eusebius von Wallenstein, a renowned Bohemian/Austrian military leader and politician who played a crucial role during the Thirty Years War (1618-1648). Serving as the supreme commander of the armies of the Habsburg Monarchy, Wallenstein led an army ranging from 30,000 to 100,000 men. The Battle of Lützen in 1632 was one of the most significant battles during this war. Although Gustavus Adolphus lost his life during this clash between Protestant and Catholic forces, ultimately it resulted in victory for the Protestants. As a defeated Wallenstein had to flee to Bohemia after this battle. In this portrait-like depiction captured by Dietz's skilled brushstrokes, we see Duke Albrecht Wenzel Eusebius von Wallenstein mounted on his horse amidst an intense battlefield scene. Clad in armor with regal ermine fur draped over him, he exudes both power and determination. This artwork not only showcases historical figures but also highlights elements such as horses and soldiers that were integral parts of warfare during that era. It serves as a testament to both human resilience and artistic talent while shedding light on an important chapter from our past.
